Thunderstorms.
It poured last night. The kind of rain that wakes you from your sleep circa two or three a.m. as it pings against the windows and lightning lights up the sky. I used to love siting outside the house on our front porch with my dad and siblings when we were younger watching the rain. My dad would ask us to quietly listen for the thunder and look for the flashes of light and would tell us how one would signal the coming of the other, almost in tandem. It was a magical time being able to sit on the porch under the awning and just listen and watch. A part of me thought it would be great last night to get up and watch it but a bigger part of me enjoyed being able to be wrapped up in blankets and drift back to sleep.
Though I did not go out last night or do anything after work aside from the hit the gym and order a Papa John's pizza (defeating said purpose to the gym), I did pour myself a glass of wine or two to celebrate the ending of my third week of work and my acceptance of a counter offer to purchase a condo. It's funny how quickly things can change in a week. I went from lamenting about the competition and lack of decent apartment options on Craigslist to seeing a couple condos with my Dad, making an offer on one, accepting a counter, and scheduling an inspection for Monday morning. Pending the inspection goes well, I'll have a place to call home here in the city in an amazing location. More to come if things pan out! I am hopeful.
On the social front, I had dinner Monday night with my second cousin and his husband. He's well-connected in the city and has already set me up on a coffee date in a little over a week with someone he knows who hopes to get me involved in an organization here in town for young professionals. A few days after that I'll be attending a meeting for another young professional group in the city. I'm checking out a new church Sunday morning (with a couple others lined up to check out in following weeks) and am excited today to grab lunch with an old friend and catch up and this evening will embark on a new adventure to see a Burlesque show with a crew of people.
Perhaps my dad's lesson of sitting quietly and patiently, listening and watching for the thunder and lightning, rings true here. Though I am trying to be incredibly proactive in quickly establishing my life here, I am also recognizing sometimes you just need to sit, wait, and watch.
Cheers.
