Spirit Day

It Gets Better

Why purple? It represents "spirit." The spirits of those who need to be uplifted by love, by compassion, by understanding, and by acceptance. I cannot begin to describe to you how powerful it was to see so many students, faculty, and staff dressed today in purple. Not because it's a fad or the cool thing to do. But because people have had enough.

I posted on facebook that I was wearing purple today. A fraternity brother who I haven't spoken to in many years commented on my status and said that while the recent gay suicides and bullying have been tragic, he wondered if I worried that by wearing purple, people might assume I am a member of the LGBT community.

My response: "My hope is that by wearing purple, people who know what it's for will recognize that I stand in solidarity and spirit with all those who are suffering or have suffered as a result of intolerance and bigotry. My least concern is how others may view my sexual identity as a result."

United we stand.
