Manpris
I used to work at the GAP during my formative years (ok, who am I kidding, I was in college) and though folding t-shirts and denim (my least favorite) was sometimes an arduous task, I met some amazing characters and truly loved my experiences there.
One day when I was working the cash wrap (a sign that you were somebody at GAP because you were promoted from roaming the floors and being stuck in the fitting room to handling the money, answering the phones, etc...what all GAP employees aspired to do), a man came in and wanted to return some pants. His girlfriend bought them for him and they were too small. The conversation went something like this...
Man: Hi, I'd like to return these pants my girlfriend bought for me.
Me: Ok sir, not a problem. Would you like to exchange them for a different size?
Man: No, thanks. They just don't fit me right. They are way too short.
Me: Let's have a look (pulling out the merchandise and realizing they were man capris (manpris)).
Man: See, they are way too short. I think something is wrong with them.
Me: No sir, these pants are made to be shorter. They are capris.
Man: My girlfriend bought me women's pants??
Me: No. They make them for men now.
Man: My girlfriend bought me women's pants??
Me: No sir. She bought you some man capris.
Man: Why would my girlfriend buy me women's pants??
Me: (beginning to think there is a language barrier) She didn't buy you women's pants. These pants are in the men's section and are made for men. They make capris for men now. But if you don't like them, I'd be happy to give you store credit for them.
Man: I cannot believe she bought me women's pants.
He just couldn't get over the fact that they make capris for men. Since that episode, I've only known two men (both straight) who own and wear manpris. They are both very confident in their sexuality and don't see an issue with it. I ALWAYS said I would never wear manpris. Too gay for me. I put them up there with jean jackets.
Then yesterday happened. I was in Banana Republic for their 40% annual outlet sale and picked out a pair of pants that were very lightweight. Perfect for summer I thought. In the dressing room, I noticed the pants have buttons on them around the calf area and realized the pants can be converted to manpris. So I tested them out and surprisingly, didn't look bad. I thought the pants would be handy for a day at the lake, beach, or just running some errands. Even a low key dinner out with friends during the spring or early fall. So I bought them (you can judge. it's ok).
So I am now the proud owner of some manpris.
It's a good feeling.
Cheers.
