The Best Picture Race #Oscars
Last night, Luke and I went to my first (and possibly his, I cannot recall) double feature at the movies. It all started when we both began lamenting that we felt we had not seen nearly enough movies to be educated about awards season. I was feeling pretty good considering I had seen Argo and Les Mis which both took home the Golden Globes for Best Drama and Best Comedy or Musical respectively. However, with 9 Best Picture nominations on the table for the Oscars, I was sitting at a measly 4. #DoBetter I told myself. So with no Friday night plans, Luke and I ventured out to Ronnie's to see Silver Linings Playbook (SLP), take a brief break to grab a bite and process the movie and then cap out the evening with Zero Dark Thirty (ZDT).
First, let me say I don't think my body loved the whole double feature idea. Or my contacts which happened to be a new type and on my second day of wearing them, they sat in my eyeballs for close to 18 hours. Oops. But I did enjoy being able to increase my Best Picture viewings to 6! Only 3 more to go. Not sure if I will make it to the last 3 before Oscars. Of those remaining, I feel I'm most likely to see Django Unchained. However, I'm not a huge Tarantino fan and while I would like to see it, not sure it would change my perspective on the other films. The other two (Amour and Life of Pi) probably will not happen. I don't mind a good foreign film but I've heard Amour is slow moving and incredibly depressing and I struggle to sit through slow moving films. As for Life of Pi, I didn't enjoy the book at all (I know, I know, party of one) and while I do believe Ang Lee has a good chance of taking home the Oscar for Best Director, I don't think the film has a chance of winning Best Picture. I came away from the films last night thinking both were really well done, believing that Bradley Cooper and Jessica Chastain both deserved their nominations, and appreciating why both films were nominated. I cannot say I LOVED either one or would rave about them but would I recommend them? Most definitely.
As for the six I have seen, Argo, Les Mis, Lincoln, ZDT, SLP, and Beasts of the Southern Wild, my vote is for Argo because it's been my standout favorite of the bunch. I vary by the day on what film I think should win it versus could win it but if we're talking purely enjoyment, my vote is Argo. My least favorite of the bunch? Hate to say it but I'm afraid it's probably Lincoln. The acting was incredible and the directing phenomenal but I just wasn't drawn to the story and kept waiting and waiting and waiting...for something to happen. Just my .02!
Excited for the Oscars next month! Cheers.
UPDATE:
After posting this on Saturday, I did not expect I'd be going to see Life of Pi on Sunday afternoon. I hadn't planned on seeing it and I certainly didn't expect to like it as much as I did. However? Incredible. Seeing it on the big screen was definitely the way to go and though I LOATHE movies in 3D, this movie needed to be in 3D. So if you're on the fence about seeing it, do it.
Seven of nine completed. Only 2 to go! May be the first year in a long time I've seen this many Best Picture noms BEFORE the big night.
