ACTION!

I'm a fan of the movies. I love them. Awards season gives me goosebumps and I may be one of the few Americans who still subscribes to the Netflix 1-DVD at a a time plan (for a measly $8.99 a month). I "borrow" my parent's streaming account for the shows I want to catch up on but there's just something I find enthralling about sitting down to watch a movie. Since moving back to NOLA, I haven't seen too many movies at the theatre. It's depressing. The theaters just aren't as close as the ones in St. Louis were and I'm just not a fan of the giant ass megaplexes. That leaves me with only two other options in the city: a single screen theatre around the corner from my house that shows more indie films, and an upscale theatre near the Quarter where you can buy alcohol and appetizers or actual food and staff give you silverware and serve you in your seat. Fancy, right?

This past week, I saw two movies: White House Down, the summer blockbuster with Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum where the White House is taken over by a Who's Who of the CIA's persons of interest  and The Bling Ring, the Sofia Coppola documentary-esque drama about the teenagers in LA who robbed celebrities homes and were naive enough to actually think they'd get away with it. I'd give WHD an A- in terms of entertainment value and Bling Ring a B. What surprised me is that I shelled out $10.25 to see WHD at the giant megaplex on a weekday at 4:30pm (apparently prices go up at 3:55pm these days) and $11.50 to see Bling Ring last night at the single screen around the corner. And once we're talking prices in the double digits folks, I tend to start basing my review on whether the movie is worth the cost. Like can I wait for the rental or is it a MUST SEE on the big screen. For instance, Life of Pi. Totally worth it for 3-D on the big screen. Monsters University? As much as I am looking forward to it, the small screen at home may do just fine.

Am I being too cheap? Unreasonable? Or does anyone else out there miss the days of $5.00 movies before 6pm and $7.50 at night? What I wouldn't give for $5.00 Wednesdays in St. Louis! I didn't realize how good I had it. And I have a feeling prices will just continue to go up. At some point, I may have to find a cheaper hobby.

Cheers.
