Weekend Update.

With the boyfriend out of town visiting his parents, I was initially unsure how the weekend would play out but still thrilled to have a couple days off work. I heard recently that vacations are needed as a way to re-energize you at work and while I would never disagree with that theory, my body (and brain) are telling me I need one desperately because I have been DRAGGING at work. Good thing I am STL bound for a long weekend in just a few days! The Tough Mudder and friend reunions await me! Couldn't be more excited. But back to this weekend...

Friday night, I ventured over to the West Bank (the horror! the horror! only I am  beginning to realize it's actually quite nice and traffic free!) to see Lee Daniels' The Butler with Daph. If you had/have any doubts about seeing this movie, let me tell you, it's incredible! I assumed I would like it but didn't realize how much I'd find the movie not only entertaining but also really informative and educational. The cast is a revolving door of who's who in the industry and when the movie ended, I was left wanting more. I know Oscar race won't heat up for a few months but I think the movie could be a contender for Daniels, Oprah Winfrey, and Forest Whitaker. My grade: A.

The Young Leadership Council  kicked off it's fall season of RECreate Saturday morning and I was on the fence about going but am really glad I did. Though we didn't have many kids show up (only about 20), I enjoyed re-connecting with some of the volunteers and felt really comfortable and at home in the space. The current project leaders are trying to groom me to step into a Project Leader role for the 2014 calendar year and I'm tossing the idea around. It's a big commitment (10 weeks in the fall, 10 in the spring, plus monthly meetings) but a great way to continue building my network here and giving back to the city.

From Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, I finally got to work on re-doing the table and chairs set I bought on Craigslist in May. I bought the set because it was a) cheap b) oval and c) had a removable leaf allowing the table to seat 4-6. But it was very "country" and I knew eventually I'd want to repaint it. My friend, Katie, thankfully helped with the project. My plan was to be able to post photos today of the finished product but welp, it didn't turn out as planned so I have to go back to the drawing board on the chairs. More to come! What I will say is that Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and I are not the best of friends as I thought we might be. Perhaps I didn't use it correctly. I need to do some research. But more to come...

Rounded out the weekend with brunch at Gott Gourmet with Peter and Jered, a 5-miler (my last "long" run before Saturday's race), and dinner with my parents. Another solid weekend in NOLA.

Cheers.
