Iko. Iko.

I was catching up with my best friend on the phone this evening and when he asked me what was new with me, I struggled with figuring out whether I had anything actually "newsworthy" to share or if I had no updates worthy of recapping. Dilemma. But I'm sure you understand. In any event, since the blog is my way of being able to look back on life and remember moments, figured it was worth recording some of those "moments."

Since it's October, I celebrated both personally and professionally, National Coming Out Day (October 11), Spirit Day (October 17), and the campus LGBTIQA Ally Day (October 18). Most involved wearing lavender or purple, honoring the community, and remembering that my gay identity is one worthy of love and belonging and my ally identity is one requiring commitment and continued education. While I appreciated the attention on the topic, I'll admit I was thrown off by staff members who either wore purple on the designated days and when they saw me said, "Look! I wore purple for you!" or the staff who didn't wear purple and when they saw me said, "Sorry! I didn't have anything purple! But I still support you." WHAT!? I know their intentions were in the right places but it still felt awkward and almost like I was being reduced to only that one identity. In a way, I felt marginalized. So I'm still processing that...

I also spent some QT with this one!

I went up to Baton Rouge this past weekend for my brother's 26th birthday and soaked up as much time with my 7-month old niece/goddaughter as I possibly could. I am in love with her! Though the Tigers lost in a terrible game to Ole Miss, I was highly impressed once again by my brother's culinary skills. Fried fish a plenty for his entire in-laws and my parents and I. A great time indeed!

Other ramblings?

  • Boo at the Zoo at Audubon Park last Friday. Though it's designed for families with small children, I still had a blast!
  • New adventures in condo ownership: The world of hiring property management.
  • A "voluntold" position on the Student Affairs Entertainment Committee. 80s track suit? Check. Epic blown out mullet wig? Check. Dancing and singing at 10:00AM in front of the entire division to Cowboy Mouth, Black Eyed Peas, and Tina Turner? Check. Check. Check.
Excited to celebrate Halloween this weekend with Ed and a cast of who knows! Costume and details TBD but stay tuned. And the weather is finally starting to feel a little less like summer. That's all folks!

Cheers.
