Excuse You.
Last night I ventured out with some friends in town for a conference and some friends from work to check out "Show Tunes Tuesday" at a bar nearby. The premise is simple: The bar only plays show tunes throughout the night. The bar plays clips from disney shows, Glee, Broadway shows, Broadway shows turned movies, and more. Hour upon hour of belt-your-heart-out show tunes. Pretty epic eh? An interesting highlight of the night included a performance by some guy with a pointed black hat, a broom, and green smoke/lights as he stood on the bar and sang to Defying Gravity from Wicked.
As we were entering the bar last night, I was showing the guy my ID when someone behind my grabbed my arse. HARD. I turned around expecting it to be my friend Kat and instead it was some creepy, older guy who simply smiled and said, "That's nice." I was grossed out. And annoyed. And shocked that this guy felt he could simply do whatever he wanted. Forget boundaries. I just stood there somewhat taken back and didn't say anything trying to process what just occurred. My buddy was livid for me. He wanted to go give the guy a piece of his mind. I told him to cool down and let it be. He couldn't believe I wouldn't go up to the guy and berate him for touching me. My response was it was now after the fact and I didn't feel like having any sort of interaction with this guy whatsoever. We headed off to another area of the bar but the entire night, my friend kept saying, "I can't believe you didn't tell that guy off." Maybe next time.
So I wonder am I making too big a deal out of this? Yes? No? I'd like to think if you were in a bar and a guy came up to you and just grabbed your chest, your ass, or even your crotch, that you'd be like "WTF? Excuse You?" Unless you're single, that other individual is incredibly good looking and your response is more along the lines of "JACKPOT!" Either way, I don't think it's appropriate or OK to walk up to a random stranger and grab them. Shit ain't cute. And neither was he...
I didn't say anything last night but I won't make that mistake again. Next time, I'm standing my ground.
Cheers.
