Saint Louie Part 1
The last time I blogged, it was from the comfort of my parent's home office. That was a little over a week ago. Since then, I packed up my corolla, drove to Atlanta, Athens, and St. Louis, took advantage of opportunities to visit with college friends, grad school friends, and former colleagues, and have spent the last few days unpacking, exploring, and settling into my new life as "dorm dad."

As any new chapter isn't complete without some adventures along the way, here's a recap of my new life beginning with the journey from Athens to St. Louis. Meet, Betty:
Sadly, I didn't have enough space to capture the full magnitude and beauty of my 14 ft uhaul towing my corolla. All in all, I think I was driving 32 feet worth of machinery and goods. It took some getting used to but after about two hours, I got the hand of navigating it using the 10-and-2-steering wheel position almost the entire time. The truck had no cruise control, no CD player, and no iPod hookup capacity. My buddy Rick and I set out around 8:40 eastern time and with 3 stops for gas, we traveled all 618 miles and arrived in St. Louis at around 7:00 central time. (If you're a math whiz, that's 11 hours and 20 minutes behind the wheel of Betty, the beast).
Feeling utterly exhausted, we pushed through to unload the truck stopping every few minutes to enjoy the amazing breeze and the cooler temperatures. We finished unloading by about 8:30pm, grabbed some beer, and dropped a frozen pizza in the oven that my new colleagues had bought for me. Wanting to do nothing more than pass out, we managed to find the energy to hit up Wally world to pick up a few essentials, made the beds, and crashed by midnight.

I spent the bette
r part of Friday morning and midday running around campus signing paperwork, getting my ID taken, meeting my new supervisor, and unpacking. Phew. Shopping and more unpacking took up the better part of Friday afternoon. Determined to do something OTHER THAN unpack, we hit up an area of time really close to campus, the Central West End area, which I immediately fell in love with!
The neighborhood is filled with a number of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, and almost all feature outdoor seating. It was a gorgeous summer evening and we enjoyed people watching and dining at a place called Culpeppers. (The photo on the left is my attempt at capturing the cuteness of the area). After dinner, we met up with Chase and Sarah at a bar near the restaurant for an amazing first evening in a neighborhood I imagine I'll spend a great deal of time. LOVE. IT.
More to come tomorrow on my travels around town including the Farmer's Market, Moolah Theatre, and Fair St. Louis for the 4th of July celebration. For now, I'll end with a shout out to America. Happy Birthday America!!

Cheers.
