"T for Time Out"
One of the benefits of my new job (one of the many) is the fact that the department normally eats lunch together everyday. Since we are all on meal plan (flex bucks this summer), we all end up at one of three open dining options this summer at noon to hang out and enjoy one another's company. In a weird way, it's our opportunity to build community since we do not all work in one central office. Rather, our offices are scattered all over campus so lunch is the one chance we have to catch up with each other.
Over lunch on Friday, one of my colleagues was discussing using a breast pump that plugged into her car when she was nursing. I was like WHOA. T-FOR TIME OUT. You used what? when? And my colleagues found it the most hysterical thing ever. Thus we launched into other Brad/Cord-isms that make their way into my everyday conversations including, "doing the most/utmost/UTTY," and "shit ain't cute" (miss you Cord!!). We had a great lunch and afterward, one of the Assistant Directors told me she thinks I'm really funny and she's looking forward to being entertained.
But aside from using "T-for time out" in that lunch setting, I find myself saying it internally in almost every training session as I navigate my new responsibilities and learn so much about student affairs that I didn't realize I simply didn't know. Things such as protocols for dealing with weapons, drugs, alcohol, mental health issues, hospital visits, deaths, search and seizures, tornadoes, earthquakes, and other emergency response issues. As a first responder, I'm being trained to handle almost any situation that could happen on campus. It's insane.
Week 2 of training begins tomorrow and despite knowing the challenges I will face to catch up with my seasoned colleagues, I'm excited to continue my learning and develop professionally.
Cheers.
