The big 2-8.

I celebrated my 28th birthday this weekend. I'll admit wholeheartedly to the cyber world that I outwardly did not make a big deal of the potential fact that I could be doing absolutely nothing for my birthday. Inwardly, I was small child praying I wouldn't be sitting by myself in my apartment all weekend. It's not that I didn't think something would happen but when you're in a brand new city in a new job and you're still getting to know people, you don't have an instant "go to" group of friends who you know will ensure you're celebrating another year.

So I'm happy to report this weekend was by far my favorite and best weekend in St. Louis thus far. It began Friday evening (my actual 28th--by the way, it's so weird to say I'm now 28) with dinner at City Diner with Brian and Jenny. Brian is a coworker of mine and his wife Jenny is a med student at SLU. They're hysterically funny, laid back, and all around great people. After dinner we headed to the International Tap House down in Soulard and met up with several other friends who work here at SLU and some college buddies. With a vast beer selection, a talented band, and a patio any bar would die for, it was a really fun evening.

I woke up early Saturday morning and hit the "Rags to Riches" Neighborhood Yard Sale with Jenny. Jenny made a few key purchases and we even had one woman ask us if we were into "weird shit" before she tried to sell us a Mexican wrestling mask. We thought it'd be perfect for Brian and planned to purchase it before noticing it had some unfortunate bodily stains on it. So we politely said, "Gross. No Thanks." and moved on.

We raced home to pack up the car before darting off to Innsbrook (circa an hour outside the city) to Jenny's cabin. In a word: epic. Jenny's family has owned a cabin in the Innsbrook community for about 10 years. The A-framed 2 bedroom cabin is minutes from a gorgeous, gasoline free lake and in the middle of the woods. A group of us headed out there to spend about 24 hours relaxing, drinking, and escaping the world of technology, residence halls, and COLLEGE STUDENTS. We spent about 4 hours Saturday afternoon out on the lake listening to music, floating in the water, and soaking up the sun. We wrapped up the day with a delicious dinner feast, strawberry margarita pie, and board games.

I ventured out to the Festival of Nations festival today to enjoy some good music, food, and check out the performances in Tower Grove Park right down the street from campus. Though we only stayed for about an hour (we're utterly exhausted...), we had a fun time and I enjoyed some good ole fashioned cajun jambalaya and mango lemonade.

I'm capping off the weekend with some carrot cake my mom had shipped to me and the 2010 Emmy awards. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my 28th birthday and though it would have been amazing to have some college and grad school friends here, my new friends made sure I felt loved. In the words of Matt Nathanson, I'm a lucky boy...

Cheers.
