Is that a bird?

Nope. It's A BAT!!! But let me back up before I get to the bat encounter. Saturday night, my friend Erin and I ventured down to St. Charles, MO (about 30 minutes outside the city) to attend a "hot summer nights" festival on Main Street. It was my first outing to St. Charles and I fell in love with the cute, quaint, historic Main Street. The street is lined with antique shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars, and even cobblestone sidewalks! There was a country band playing covers in the street and it seems the whole town came out to enjoy some great cool(ish) weather, good music, drinks, and food! We met up with another of my coworkers and her boyfriend and spent the evening listening to Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and others while taking in the whole scene.

My coworker invited us back to her house for a swim and while Erin and I didn't get in the pool, we did sit on the edge hanging out while my coworker and her boyfriend swam. While we were hanging out (and noticing how clearly we could see the Dippers being out of the city), I kept seeing this thing out of the corner of my eye. It would appear in my eyesight briefly and then it'd be off again. For a moment, I couldn't tell if it was really anything or if it was just my eyes getting tired. But then I saw it again and I said, hmmm, a little too big to be a bug, must be a bird. I continued to see it flash by and occasionally hit the water but still didn't think much of it. Until it started hovering and flying in a circle around us. And by that point, I noticed it was not in fact a bird.

And then my friend Erin, goes, THATS A BAT!!! And then ensued the screaming, thrashing, and running by four adults between the ages of 27-35 who jumped out of the pool and ran up the stairs. Once we were "safe" on the deck, we sat there staring out at the pool rehashing the whole episode. Our nerves calmed and we started laughing about the whole affair. And then it flew right by us on the deck. And then the screaming, thrashing, and running ensued once again as we all darted inside the house. Once inside, we laughed SO HARD. But I think for my coworker who lives there, it was a nervous laugh. Because it's her backyard. And she enjoys a good evening swim.

I hope I never come that close to a bat again. Ever. No thank you...

Cheers.

Interesting to hear an outsider's opinion of St. Charles! Ha! I'd say the "insider" view is a little different. :)

Also, bats should be our friends. They eat mosquitos. Are you happy we don't have malaria in the US? I am. Thank that bat next time you see him.
