Housekeeping!

Today was an "other duties as assigned" kind of day. You know what I'm talking about. Find any job description for almost any type of job and down at the bottom, there's a simple little bullet point that says, "Other duties as assigned." Essentially, it means you can (and will) be asked to do things not stated in your description and you're left with either doing them or bowing out and living the life of the unemployed.

Despite the fact that today is Saturday, we open the halls this week and there's no rest for the weary. I went over to a colleague's office today to have him help me take care of a few things and intended to be over for no longer than an hour. This was at 2:30pm.

What time did I leave? 8:30pm. UM WHAT? EXCUSE ME? What happened to my day? Enter "Other duties as assigned." A student in one of the buildings spent the summer living in a 4 bedroom apartment on campus. His contract ended Monday and a new student was moving in today. No biggie. Well, the student didn't exactly move out Monday. Or ever. And despite the constant nagging from our office that he needed to come back and collect ALL of his belongings and clean his apartment, he never showed. Which brings us to today. 2:30pm. We walked over to check out the scene of the apartment and to our dismay, it was a HOT MESS. I was shocked college students live in such filth. So with no other options, we rounded up a group of RAs, grabbed some cleaning supplies and spent the next 2 hours filling 12 garbage bags with crap and scrubbing the entire 4 bed/2 bath apartment from head to toe. We were maids on a mission. We finished 10 minutes after the new resident arrived but we were able to stall her with paperwork and she never knew!

And that boys and girls is why my job is never dull. Because there's always something...I definitely did not enjoy cleaning up the filth the previous tenant left behind but I do take some comfort in knowing he'll be getting a STEEP house cleaning bill. Like somewhere around $500. We don't come cheap!

The highlight of the day was definitely a 3.5 mile run with one of our student staff members capped off with a P90X ab workout after. The student is definitely one of my favorites on campus and it gave me a chance to get to know him a lot better while we ran. So for that I'm grateful. Just further affirmation of loving the work I get to do!

Cheers.
