Walk to Madrid
Every summer (dating back to who knows when...) the university encourages faculty and staff to participate in a program called "Walk to Madrid." The premise is simple: Walk to Madrid. Sorta. You get a team together, you all get pedometers, and you basically track your steps for two months. Each week there's a team challenge and if your team completes the challenge, your steps are doubled. And at the end of July, they do some big ceremony to award the winners with prizes.
Can you actually Walk to Madrid? No. Neither literally or metaphorically. The full distance is 4,400 miles. But I guess some teams get pretty close by completing all the challenges and having everyone walk their booty off. I applaud the university for engaging faculty and staff throughout the summer to be ACTIVE and pursue healthier lifestyles. It's been fun to see staff members strutting back and forth across campus during the lunch hour. Apparently, claiming to live an active lifestyle means logging about 10,000 steps per day (close to 5 miles of walking per day). I feel like that's quite a lot. Do you think you walk close to 5 miles a day? Apparently the steps add up (especially if you hit the gym for about 45 minutes per day...)
I'm on a team with my department and we got our pedometers a week late (reason unknown) so last week, we had to guesstimate our steps. Yep, as difficult as it sounds. Luckily, there's a worksheet that tells you how to convert workouts into steps so I just based my last week's total (58,000+) steps on my cardio and weightlifting. But then my colleague claimed he logged 93,000 steps last week. WHAT!?!?!
This week, with pedometer attached to my hip, I've been diligent. And since Monday, I've logged 59,000+ steps. I'm headed to Chicago for the weekend and I was going to take the pedometer with me but I've decided against it. So my 59,000 for the week will have to do. (Note: that's about an average of 15,000 steps per day). Pretty crazy... And since I completed the Week 2 challenge (submit a healthy recipe), my steps should double!
Suddenly this song is playing in my head...
