Order in the court!

I'm not a lawyer. In fact, I've never had much of an interest in pursing a degree, much less, a career in law. But I AM a huge fan of CBS' The Good Wife and I've always been partial to the law side of Law & Order: SVU over the gritty cop side. Plus, the cop side of SVU is always predictable. In any event, as a hearing officer for the university in which I work, I often wonder when I'm participating in a hearing if I could make it as a lawyer. You know, real life. And though I have no interest in embarking down that path, I think I could do quite well for myself.

I've participated in a number of hearings and for a myriad of reasons, am not at liberty to say when they were, who they involved, or any details surrounding the cases at all. But what I can say is that I keep reminding myself each time to pump the brakes. Because a university hearing is not a court room, there are no guilty (or non-guilty) verdicts, and there are no prosecutor or defending attorneys. There are accuser and accused parties, advisors, and outcomes of responsibility or no responsibility. So even if/when I want to shout "OBJECTION" "RELEVANCE YOUR HONOR?" "BADGERING THE WITNESS" etc. and keep waiting for a judge that does not exist to say, "OVERRULED" or "Counselors, approach the bench" I have to bite my tongue and say to myself, you're not a lawyer and this is not a court room.

Perhaps it's my love of the law on TV or my love of the challenge. Either way, I have a feeling in another life, I could do quite well as a lawyer...Maybe one day.

Cheers.
