The Gratitude Lists.
I'm engaging in this new daily exercise (need to switch up the routine right?). It consists of spending a few moments each night writing in a journal a dear friend gave me 10 years ago this Christmas and jotting down three things I'm grateful for that day. I'll be the first to admit it's been a difficult task and on one occasion, I was only able to be grateful for one thing that day. Saturday was a rough day.
All that being said, I wanted to share with the blog a few of those things I am grateful for.
A capella music.
Little Drummer Boy is my favorite Christmas tune (along with My Grown Up Christmas List). I fell in love with a little singing competition on NBC four winters ago, The Sing-Off, and am glad the show is back for it's third? fourth? season this year. I watched the two-hour premiere last night and LOVED. IT. Truth be told though, I've been a sucker for a capella music since college. Probably will always be.
Worship.
I checked out another new worship site Sunday morning, Trinity Episcopal on Jackson, with a friend who knows one of the Rectors. I've never leaned toward the Episcopal faith before but appreciate its similarities to Catholic Mass with its more inclusive environment. I really enjoyed the service from the beautiful voices of the choir to the sermon that hit home and has stayed with me. I rarely find myself still thinking about a sermon days later much less directly after church so I'm grateful for the experience. We ended up grabbing brunch after at Satsuma and were joined by my friend's friend, the Rector. It was nice being able to share my faith journey (and struggles) with him and hear about his own. I'm not sure if Trinity will become my new home but I'm thankful for a worship experience that helped ground me this past weekend.
Oh, and for spotting what I think is the house where Coven is set. I think.
Relationships.
Many of my gratitude lists have contained the names of friends or family who have been AMAZING during this time for me. Flowers and cupcakes from coworkers, dinners out and in, drinks, movies, and friend dates have all helped remind me that even if/when we are feeling alone, love surrounds us. They can't fill the current void and in a way, I'm grateful for that because it makes me hopeful for what the future holds. It makes me want and hope for something more. Even if in the present that absence causes much pain.
Regardless of whether you're experiencing a transition in your own life or not, I challenge you to spend some time thinking about what you're grateful for. A new year will soon be upon us. Whether you're a resolutions person or not, what are you hoping for in the new year? And what have you learned about yourself in this year to carry you forward?
Cheers.
