Jimmy?
Rhodes Soccer came to town this weekend to face off against both Fontbonne and Wash U. I went to both games to relive my college days of cheering on my roommates, buddies, and brothers who played on the team, support my old roommate who is the current Goalie coach, and catch up with some parents who played an integral role in supporting me while at Rhodes.
Rhodes dominated Fontbonne Friday night with a 3-1 victory. Sadly, the victory was overshadowed by the star senior forward who broke his arm in two places with only seconds left in the game. After the game, my old roommate and the coach came up to the stands to say hello to our cheering squad and coach turned to me and said, "Jimmy?" "Brad." I responded. "Sorry," he said, "I had heard there was a Jimmy coming to see the game tonight." After we left, I turned to my buddy and said blankly, "Do you think Jimmy is a pro stud?" He said most likely. GREAT. So coach just confused me with some 17 year old high school senior who was coming out to watch the game in hopes of maybe playing at Rhodes in the future. Nevermind I graduated from Rhodes five years ago. Nevermind I'm A DECADE OLDER than Jimmy probably is. Maybe even a decade plus one.
So here's the thing...Would you be upset if someone mistook you for a high schooler? Or would it be a compliment that you look young. I'm taking it as more of a WTF. I mean, sure, when I'm 40 and people say I can't be a day over 30, I'll jump for you. And at 50 when they say, are you 40 yet? I'll again smile with pride. But at 28, being mistaken for a high school student isn't as great. I lived through high school. I'd prefer not to return to those days...
Even with that little diddy, it turned out to be an EPIC weekend. I feel blessed that I'm having quite a few of those lately. Perfect weather, drinks with friends, the Clayton Art Fair, networking with some Wash U folk, a 755 reunion, Rendezvous BBQ, and Lynx soccer.
Cheers!
