New fashion trend?

I've always considered myself pretty trendy and fashionable. But there's a new fashion craze that I can't quite figure out. It's the athletic shoe with the black sock. And no, I'm not talking a black ankle sock. Because I have those and I get that. I'm talking the black sock that comes up to right below your shin. Sometimes it has a Nike or Adidas logo on it. But often times, it's just a solid black sock. And I'm left scratching my head. I first started noticing this new craze toward the end of my spring semester at UGA. But I didn't encounter the look again until I arrived here in St Louis. I've seen fraternity "bros" and athletes sporting the look. And today in the gym, I saw a handful of guys representing the new trend.

What I cannot seem to figure out is WHY? I mean first there was the white tube sock. And then came the athletic sock, and then the ankle sock. But the black sock? It almost looks like a dress sock and if memory serves, there indeed was a point in time where sporting your dress socks with your tennis shoes was not cool or anywhere close to it. Instead it usually meant you had no eye for fashion or you forgot your athletic socks and were forced to wear your dress socks instead. You stuck out like a sore thumb.

But this new look? It's cool, hip, trendy. You see your bro sporting the same look in the gym and you pound it or give each other a chest bump. You blast your pecs, crunch out some abs, talk sports. So is this new look part of some new bro code? Being labeled a "bro" by my colleagues, I feel like I should be in the know, not an outsider wondering whether my days of wearing white ankle socks with my running shoes are numbered. Or perhaps this new fad will not ever fully catch on and soon be a thing of the past, like the toe shoe.

Cheers.
