New Traditions...

I bought my first (fake) Christmas tree last year from K-Mart for a whopping $20. It's a 6-foot gem and while growing up I was diabolically opposed to anything fake showing up in our living room at home, the hassle of going out to purchase a real tree, tying it down to the top of my car and lugging it up to the second floor of my apartment last year didn't seem all that appealing. But as a small tyke, I LIVED for going out with Dad, Nat and Jeff to pick out that special tree, lug it inside, turn on Christmas music and decorate the ever living heck out of the tree and the house! From the Christmas tree itself to the fireplace, the stairs, the windows in the dining room, the nativity scene on the front table, and our very own homemade wreaths we had to bring back to life each year with a fork, it was my favorite time of year. But I knew last year I'd be headed home for a good part of the holiday and didn't want to return to a dead tree. So fake it was. Womp Womp.

I envisioned the poor sucker looking like a kin to Charlie Brown's tree but once I had it up and decorated with some lights and various ornaments, it came out quite nice! The photo to the left is of the tree last year in my apartment in Athens. I put it up the day after Thanksgiving while Rent played in the background (the DVD). It was a wonderful way to cap off the Thanksgiving weekend and gave me the chance to enjoy the tree for a few weeks before I headed home. Thus began my own new tradition of putting up the tree while watching Rent the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

I got up this morning excited to get the tree out and put it together using my creative and artistic eye to mold each branch just so to transform the tree from a pole with a bunch of branches to a Christmas tree. It's still a work in progress (hence why you're viewing last year's photo) and is in need of a tree skirt and a star for the top. But a quick trip to the store later today should solve both of those issues. I'm also debating buying something that is real pine (a wreath? a table decoration? something?) so that I can enjoy the fresh pine scent. We'll see what's out there. In the interim, I at least have some holiday candles that make the place feel a bit more seasonal. And of course, "Seasons of Love," and "I'll Cover You" are here to keep me company.

I enjoy this new tradition (how many years do you have to do something before it becomes a tradition? more than 1? 3? 5?) and hope to continue it year after year. Perhaps when I truly settle down, I'll ditch the fake tree for a real one and invest in some nice ornaments as well (as opposed to my colored balls for now) but I cannot complain. My 6-foot fake tree hardly resembles Charlie Brown's and add a nice touch to the apartment.

What about you? What new traditions have you and your partners started around the holidays?

Happy Holidays! Cheers.
