Tough Critic.
I've been really hard on SYTYCD season 6. At first I thought it was just because season 5 had just ended and I wasn't in the right state of mind to jump into a new season of the show. SYTYCD is my summer show, not my fall show. But I carved out time in my insanely busy fall schedule to watch the show because I love it and I can't imagine missing a season.
And the more I watched, the more out of love I was falling with the show. Here's why...
1. The cast: With an overwhelming majority of the cast being 18-19 years old, I found it difficult to connect with them and felt like I was watching some disney show for the first time.
2. The new stage: With a move to a new studio, the stage is bigger than ever and is a bit too much for my taste. I miss the old stage with the two staircases. The new lights, screens, and graphics detract from the talent of the dancers.
3. The addition of Adam: I love Adam Shankman. LOVE. I am happy to see him join Mary and Nigel as a permanent judge but not at the expense of losing a new guest judge every week. Why can't SYTYCD still have a guest judge each week in addition to Adam? Perhaps it's not possible but I'll miss hearing from Mia, Lil C, Tyce, and NapTab this season from behind the judge's table.
4. The absence of Mia: Probably the biggest reason I'm tough on this season. Mia left the show. For the past six seasons, Mia has without a doubt been my favorite choreographer on the show. Her contemporary routines have blown me away and have been my favorite part of the show. With her gone, there's a huge absence/void.
So needless to say, I've been a tough critic.
And then I saw the performance below choreographed by Canadian, contemporary, choreographer Stacey Tookey. AMAZING. So perhaps there is a light somewhere in season 6...
