And so it begins...
Our cohort has often theorized how we would react to and treat one another as the job search approached us. Would we share job posts we found? Would we be competing for the same positions? Would we genuinely congratulate one another once phone interviews, on campus interviews, and job offers started rolling in? What if if was for a job that we also applied for? Could we avoid a tinge of bitterness or jealousy from creeping into our hearts as classmates found jobs before us? Would we compare ourselves to each other? Would the job search for cohort 2010 become the next Survivor to see who could outwit and outperform to secure a job. What if you were the last one in the cohort to secure a job? What if everyone had offers but you?
Of course, the goal is for all 16 members of cohort 2010 to find jobs at institutions we believe in, support, and are a good match. We wish and hope the best for one another that we will all find the right job. For some it may be the perfect job but overall, we're just hoping it's not the wrong job as we enter/re-enter the field.
Today, two classmates received phone calls during class that they had been selected for phone interviews for a position in a school in Atlanta. We all cheered for them and said congrats. Yet another student in the cohort later informed me she applied for the same position but received no phone interview. Sad day.
As we all strive to support one another through this arduous and nerve-wracking process, we can only hope we can remain positive and enthusiastic and try to avoid any feelings of negativity, bitterness, or jealously from taking over. We shall see.
I've now applied for five jobs (4 in the south, 1 in the New England area) and hope in the next 3-4 weeks to begin hearing about those positions as they close and begin their selection process. In the meantime, I'll keep plugging along!
Cheers.
