KING CAKE!

Just yesterday, one of our faculty was asking me if I did anything for Mardi Gras this year. "Nope." was my reply followed by, "and my parents didn't even send me a king cake this year which they normally do." I didn't whine about it but getting a king cake from them every year helps me remember the season and helps me celebrate just a little since I'm normally swamped this time of year and cannot afford to take time off to head down there. I haven't been home for Mardi Gras since college which is depressing! During my admissions days, we always had our scholarship interview weekends during Mardi Gras and since coming to grad school, a 9 hour drive seems a bit too far just for a short weekend.

Tonight, I was debating whether I would apply to a job in West Virginia or one in Missouri, or both, or neither and wondering why on God's green earth our neighbors upstairs are loud as F when there was a knock on my door. I opened it to find that all too familiar box from Randazzo's. And inside, this!
I just stared at it in all it's glory. A king cake. I could instantly smell the cinnamon goodness and despite today being Ash Wednesday and the Catholic faith's stance that Catholic adults should somewhat fast on this day, I couldn't resist the temptation. It was a little slice of heaven. Mmmm.

The mention of Ash Wednesday reminds me that today beings the Lenten season. I blogged about receiving Ashes last year on this day (which I did again this morning and managed to make it from 7:30am-1:45pm before I touched my forehead and turned the cross into a blob). So if you're curious about why ashes on the forehead, check the former post out here. I don't want this post to turn into a novel so I'll save the whole, "What are you giving up for Lent?" conversation for tomorrow or Friday. So stay tuned...

Cheers.

what do you do for your "somewhat fast" on ash wednesday & good friday? i was thinking about this, as yesterday i only ate 3 meals (no snacks - and yeah, some catholic things i still like to do) - but i was wondering if there was actually some written doctrine about it, or if the 3 meal thing was just how my family interpreted it when i was growing up.
