Day & Night

Last night I dragged took my mother to see Toy Story 3. She wasn't exactly excited about going but I REALLY wanted to see the film and said I'd go alone if I had to (I do that from time to time. And I don't think there's anything depressing about sitting in a movie theatre by yourself if you really want to see something and no one else does or everyone has already seen it). She didn't want me to go alone and figured it'd be a good bonding experience for us. So off we went.

This post isn't about the film but if you haven't seen it and remotely like the first two, go see it. It's witty, endearing, heartwarming, funny, and in the end, may just have you in tears. So check it out. It was great to reconnect with the characters that made Pixar who they are today and the film stands on its own. Probably one of the few sequels that in my opinion is as good as the original.

But in true Pixar fashion, a short film premiered before the film. Pixar's latest short film, Day & Night has almost no dialogue at all and on the surface, is about two Casper-looking characters who show off the perks of being Day and of being Night. But if you pay attention and really watch the film, there's a deeper meaning about appreciating differences and recognizing that underneath the surface, we're really one and the same. I'd like to believe the film is aimed at ending discrimination, uniting in our common humanity, and treating one another with dignity and respect rather than rejecting, shunning, and spewing hatred toward those who appear to be different from you. The whole time I watched the film, thoughts of Prop 8 and gay marriage filled my head.

I was talking to my mom about it after the film over dinner and she told me she didn't get it. She said her thoughts were filled with the taste of a warm, soft pretzel and she kept debating whether to go get one or not. Sigh... So maybe eat before you see it.

In any event, huge props and kudos to Pixar for Toy Story 3 and for delivering an important message in a creative way in Day & Night.

Cheers.
