A Tale of Two Offers...
I've hinted on the blog lately that I hoped to have the whole job search/quest wrapped up and finalized by the end of this week. I may need to extend that to next Friday. But since folks have been asking, here are the details I feel comfortable putting online for all the world to see.
The week prior to Memorial Day weekend, I had two job interviews. Now the institutions, locations, and the job opportunities could not be more different from one another. Potential Job #1 is smack dab in the heart of a huge, urban, midwestern city that may or may not have a giant Arch as its trademark. It's a private religiously-based institution, mid-sized, and the position is in a functional area I swore up and down the past 10 years I'd never consider. Yet here I am considering living on campus surrounding myself with students and "washing my adult clothes" in the community laundry rooms (a concept a certain friend cannot seem to get past) because it's a great place to be. Shortly after leaving the interview, I found out the school wanted me but had to wait for HR to process everything first. Here we are almost two weeks later since that initial conversation and HR seems to be dragging their feet. So an offer should be forthcoming. (Sidenote: I have verbally told this school I am committed to this opportunity but with no offer yet, I'm in limbo).
Enter Potential Job #2. Two days after getting back from Potential Job 1 visit, I dashed off to the mountains on the Eastern side of the US to interview for a position in a functional area I have some experience in at a prestigious, public, land-grant, institution in a small, college town. The kind of institution anyone would want to work at and the kind of community anyone would want to be a part of. Especially if you're a fan of the outdoors. While I love the school, the area, and the community, I'm not so sure the job is the BEST fit for me and I'm not so sure I'm at a point in my life where I want to live in a rural, small town versus returning to a big city. Yet Potential Job #2 really liked me and offered me an amazing opportunity to join them. And it's so tempting!
So here I am at the cusp of wrapping up my job search. I will for sure be employed and will for sure be starting my new job in about a month. The only question that remains is where I will be. If Job #1 follows through with an actual offer, chances are I'll be moving back to a big city and experiencing four seasons for probably the first time ever. Like four for real, for real seasons. But if Job #1 doesn't, I'll be heading off to the mountains and enjoying a relaxed pace!
Cheers.

and i must say, not that i even know where you're talking about or anything, but the third season, Fall, is simply lovely in midwestern towns that might or might not have large arches downtown on the river.
and i might or might not know a 58 year old woman with a midwestern accent who lives about 25 minutes away from the city and who'd love to act as a surrogate mom if you ever needed one.
