Summer Reading Fun
The problem with not putting labels on your previous posts is the inability to remember/find out whether you've essentially blogged the same thing before. But if I cannot remember, perhaps neither can you. In any event, I'm sure I've mentioned at one point or another that I'm less a fan of library books and more a fan of running to Target and picking up a couple things to read. I love the feel of owning a book and enjoy storing it on my bookshelf when I'm done. There's something sophisticated about having books in your home. So I enjoy collecting novels. And I get really bummed when I buy a book that I end up hating and when I read a book I love that I didn't buy. But rarely, if ever, will I go back and re-read a book I have previously read. Once it's finished, it's finished.
Toward the end of my time in Athens, I finally got a library card and began checking out books but they never had anything checked in I wanted to read and I hated waiting for books. But I did manage to read a few things. And I imagine once I get settled in St. Louis, I'll look for a way to check out some library books so I'm not spending a fortune buying books!
I'm surprised at myself that I haven't read more this summer during my soon-to-be-over 6 week break between graduate school and starting the new job but thought I'd share with you all what I have been reading lately...
A favorite of mine I read back in 07 that I loved re-reading...

I haven't read any of Sparks' fictional pieces (though I'm a huge fan of The Notebook movie) but I'm a sucker for memoirs and this one tugs at the heart. Sparks shares with the readers his inspirations for some of his biggest books, chronicles a three week vacation around the world with his older brother, Micah, and opens up about his tragic, yet hopeful, upbringing and family journey.
I followed it up with this book which I hear is in production to be turned into a film produced by and starring Nicole Kidman.
Another tragic, but hopeful read, the book tells the story of a refuge from Nigeria and a woman from the UK who meet on the beach in Nigeria and whose lives are inextricably linked forever after by the events that occurred.
Currently on the nightstand,

A book my mom recommended. I'm engrossed. The book centers on a 13-year old boy named Johnny whose twin sister was abducted a year ago. It follows his quest to find out what happened to her in the hopes it will repair the damage to his devastated and destroyed family.
And waiting in the wings is the book series, EVERYONE AND THEIR GRANDMOTHER has been talking about. Need proof? It's the cover of EW this week. And there's a TON of buzz around the U.S. version of the film that's in the works. I hear great things and am eager to dive in!

What are you reading these days? Any recommendations I should check out?
Cheers.

I'm not sure I've read anything groundbreaking of late to recommend. Although, there are some on my to-read list that might interest you.
1) the new book by the Eat, Pray, Love woman - I think it sort of dissects marriage (the history, present state, etc), which might be interesting for you - because I can't imagine dissecting present-day marriage & not addressing same-sex
2) The Swan Thieves (which is the new book by the woman who wrote The Historian [did you read that? it's a sort of fun historical mystery about Dracula - but not in a cheesy way]).
3) Still Alice - it's about a Harvard professor in her 50s who gets diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers.
