State of the Union

"We may have differences in policy but we all believe in the rights enshrined in our Constitution. We may have different opinions but we believe in the same promise that says, this is a place where you can make it if you try. We may have different backgrounds but we believe in the same dream that says this is a country where anything is possible no matter who you are, no matter where you come from."
- President Barack Obama

I'll admit I haven't been listening intently to the State of the Union Address which perhaps as a good American, I should be. I have it on in the background while I surf the net (100 most eligible gay bachelors, facebook, blog reading, and gchat conversation with a grad school friend) but it's on nonetheless and I've tuned in here and there to catch Obama speak to bringing troops home by summer (praise baby J), the creation of jobs, budget cuts, and the need to rebuild and recommit to the education system here in the US so that truly, "no child is left behind."

But it was the quote above I really honed in on and find troubling. Because to be honest, I don't really believe that this is a country where you can make it if you try. Because I don't believe that every person has the same opportunities or the same means to succeed. And if you try to tell me we all make our own lot in life, I don't want to hear it. Because it isn't true. Furthermore, we DO have different backgrounds and we DON'T all believe that anything is possible no matter who you are and where you come from.

Yes, the repeal of DADT is a huge victory for gay equality but what about gay marriage? Is this really a country where anything is possible no matter who you are? Gay marriage isn't possible. Gay rights continue to be swept under the rug. So no, Mr. President, I don't think I can give credit to your sentiment.

Call me a cynic. I applaud his efforts. I applaud him for rising above politics by not sporting a red OR blue or any combination of red and blue tie. Lavender suited him just fine. I applaud his desire, his dream, his wish for our country to keep moving forward and upward. I just wish we ALL moved forward. Together.

Cheers.
