SNOWmageddon.

I had been told that the university here NEVER closes. No matter how bad the weather gets, we don't close. It just doesn't happen. So a couple weeks back when we got about 6 inches of snow and everything in the city closed and tons of staff members called in to say the roads were too bad, the show went on as planned. No closing.

So imagine my surprise then when an email went out early today saying classes would be canceled as of 4pm today, staff were free to leave, and the campus would be closed Tuesday. People wondered whether God came down and had a talking to with the President. It was music to their ears. It was NOT music to my ears.

As a live in staff member, I am considered essential staff so even when the university closes, I am open. Which is fine with me. I don't have to drive to work or walk outside to the office. I can work in jeans and a hoodie. And we were told we could even work from our apartments as long as we were accessible in the event of an emergency. I'm down with that. Plus I have a ton to do and I'm content to get it done with some great music and a big pot of coffee!

It was so interesting though in my position to see the other side of the table and be part of an emergency hour long staff meeting today to discuss the worst case scenario in the event we did receive the 12+ inches of snow, the ice storms, power outages and food shortages. The steps we would need to take to care for the 4k residents on campus. And I was pretty impressed with how quickly we threw together a plan of attack and braved for the worst! As I stare outside at the icy terrain, I'm wondering when the snow will fall and how bad it will be.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Cheers.
