Daphne Does St. Louis
I was eagerly anticipating the weekend as my good friend, Daphne, whom I went to grad school with, came to STL to hang out for a long weekend. Though the weather this weekend was anything but desirable, we didn't let it stop us from a wonderful time together. So what did we do?
Since she flew in Thursday night, I took Friday off and we headed out to Meramec Caverns to check out the 7 story cave. Yes, cave. Apparently, the area is famous as Jesse James is said to have hid in these caves. There's even a wax museum in his honor but unfortunately, it was closed and we weren't able to take a peek. But with our fearless leader, Dustin, and a small group of country folk, we spent close to an hour and a half exploring the caves and learning all about the wonderful world of stalagmites and stalactites. (Trying saying that 10 times fast...) It was a really cool tour though, complete with a few light shows, and I got way more photos on my camera than I did my cell phone (Note: AT&T's whole "more bars in more places"? Nah, not in the cave. Not. one. single. bar.)
But our tour guide did point out two "famous" spots where an episode of Lassie was filmed and a scene in the 1940s Tom Sawyer film where he gets in a fight with Injun Joe and falls down a cliff. If you're ever in the STL area (and I say area since it was about an hour outside the city, I highly recommend the caves!)
Here's another photo:
Friday night we went to one of my favorite wine bars, Sasha's on Shaw, for a late dinner and some good drinks. There was a light rain but we were able to sit outside near a fire pit and enjoy the cooler temperatures. I had baby lamp chops with a vegetable orzo that was divine.
I unfortunately had to work for a minute Saturday morning but Saturday afternoon we went to Forest Park to catch the 39th annual Great Balloon Race. There's supposedly a gorgeous balloon glow where they light up all the hot air balloons but we missed it the night before. But we did get to see several of the balloons take off and despite the overcast gloom, the balloons were really pretty. Here's a couple photos...

Saturday night we went to a local sports bar to watch a couple games and grab some grub with a few friends of mine. We awoke this morning to a downpour (still raining 12 hours later...) and luckily, had planned to cook in so it worked! We made a great breakfast with sausage, biscuits, and a scrambled egg dish with roma tomatoes, mushrooms, and cheese. Delicious! Before taking her the airport this evening, we had time for a movie and a trip to the mall.
All in all, a wonderful weekend having her here! Very thankful for great friends.
Cheers.
