Award Season
I usually blog in January each year about the looming award season highlighting what movies I've seen, what I hope to see before Oscar night, what 25 movies EW recommends you see before Oscar night, etc. I also usually sit like a giddy school girl in front of the television soaking in the Golden Globes and SAG awards as precursors to the Oscars and a glimpse into how the big night might play out. But this year was a bit different. I went to Thailand for two weeks in January missing the Golden Globes (the first in years) and returning home the day of the SAG awards, my jet lag rendering me a useless, tired heap and I could barely stay away through the first half of the show.
So needless to say, I am feeling a bit out of whack this year when it comes to award season and it's a strange, new feeling. Not that I would give up my trip to Thailand, absolutely not.
But it's probable the award season will completely pass me by this year and while I will be watching the Oscars excited to see who wins the big awards, how Billy Crystal's return as host HAS to be a VAST improvement over Anne and James, and whether for the first time in possibly ever(?) two African-American actresses will take home the awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, I am not feeling very invested. I have only seen 4 of the 9 nominated Best Pictures (Descendants, MoneyBall, Tree of Life, The Help), have not seen the one favored to win (The Artist), and am unlikely to catch the others before the big night (Extremely Loud, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, War Horse). Of those, Extremely Loud is the only one I may catch in advance. I'd also like to say I've seen My Week with Marilyn, The Iron Lady, and Albert Nobbs, but alas, a big NOPE for all three.
Looks like I'll be playing a big game of catch up later in the spring. Cheers.
