The Color of Memphis.

A faculty friend of mine who I grow fonder of each time I interact with him invited me to attend his recent show at the Sheldon Concert Hall. I had heard previously that he was pretty good with a guitar and since he's someone I admire greatly at work, decided I'd take him up on his invite and check out his show.

My friend Kelly and I grabbed dinner beforehand at Triumph and looked forward to his show not really knowing what we were getting ourselves into. Covers? Originals? Jazz? Blues? Rock n Roll? Who knew! My only previous knowledge was that he had been known to do some James Taylor from time to time.

The show ROCKED. MY. WORLD. Well, and Kelly's too. She leaned over at one point and said, "I feel bad for folks who cannot be here and don't know what they're missing." True story. He was incredible! He played for close to 2.5 hours with a friend, Johnny Hurley, whom he has recently been recording with. They invited a few friends up to join them for a song here and there and honestly, I could have sat there for hours. I loved his covers of John Denver, James Taylor, and the Zac Brown Band, but my favorites? Those were the originals. And the stories that preceded them of life growing up in a small town in Maine.

The highlight of the night for me (aside from watching Rob in his element) was a song he wrote on the piano and played titled, "The Color of Memphis." It's going to be featured on his upcoming CD and might just be my new favorite song about my second home, the city of Memphis. I saw him today in a meeting and mentioned my love of the song and he said for that, he felt compelled to give me a free copy of the new CD. SWEET!

An amazing night listening to an incredibly talented, down to earth, and friendly guy. Looking forward to the CD coming out.

Cheers.
