DGL.
DGL. Distinguished Gentlemen's Lunch. It happens every Wednesday, 12PM 'til, usually the same location though we have been known to switch things up periodically. I cannot quite recall when specifically it started up, sometime early February I believe, yet it has become not only a staple in my week but a highlight as well.
The gentlemen? Well, there's myself (obviously) and then three students, all student staff members from another staff, all whom I have grown to greatly enjoy, appreciate, and become a champion for, each in their own ways. I don't quite know how I became so close to these three guys, all good friends themselves, but could not be more grateful for their presence in my life and that they have allowed me to infiltrate their inner circle. While I believe they see me as they friend, I'd like to see myself as more of the big brother gaining three additional little brothers that I definitely would not have wanted growing up but now would be remiss to not have in my life.
I am writing about them today because I was invited to attend an event last night with one of them who is graduating that was sponsored by an office here on campus for graduating seniors and a faculty or staff member of their choosing who most impacted their collegiate experience. I was beyond touched and honored to be his guest and spend some extra time with him. He's headed to law school next year, full scholarship in fact, and I look forward to seeing where the road takes him long term. Luckily for me, he's sticking around this neck of the woods which will allow me to get together with me once he is no longer donning the undergraduate cap.
All this to say, I have a pretty incredible career. One that not only fills me with excitement and passion each and every day for the work that I get to do but one that also allows me to be a companion on my students' journeys and, if I am fortunate, form some lasting bonds along the way. I do not know when my time here will come to an end before I move on to another university but I know that no matter when that is, I will be able to reflect back on my time here, think of these three men in particular, and smile knowing they have impacted me and I in return. I am one lucky boy.
Cheers.
