Memphis.

I'm not talking about that amazing city I call my second home. I'm talking about the Broadway show that won the Tony for Best Musical in 2010. After after seeing the show at the Fox last night, I understand why. I LOVED it. The story line about Huey Calhoun, a white disc jockey in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1960s who rocked the small southern town by playing "negro music" and changing the music culture for whites. His love interest with the most talented female singer in town, Felicia, and their quest to be together in a city that was not forgiving or tolerant toward interracial relationships. The cast not only impressed me with their acting chops and dancing numbers but with their voices. The music was UNREAL and incredibly moving. Fill your soul kind of music. The undertones surrounding civil rights and equality, paralleling and bringing up emotions from the past week over the political and religious battle surrounding marriage and gay rights hit close to home and drew me even more into the powerful musical.

Whether you have an intimate knowledge of the city of Memphis or not, this is a musical not to be missed if it's heading your way. A definite treat. Though I've yet to purchase the soundtrack, you better believe it'll be appearing on my iTunes in the near future. The show once again reaffirmed my love for the stage and Broadway musicals. And for the heart and soul of the city of Memphis.

Cheers.
