Ice Skating

I have this somewhat irrational fear of ice skating rinks. I attribute it to the fact that they didn't really exist when I was growing up down south and to a horrific experience I had sometime during/post college at a skating rink right outside Memphis. I had been with friends ice skating and SLAMMED into this small child whose height was no taller than my thigh. I took the tiny tot down with me, he was screaming, I was in pain, and I ended up with this MASSIVE purple welt on my leg. PAIN-FUL. Pain for days. So needless to say, I have somewhat tried to avoid both ice skating rinks and small children on said rinks since.

So when the topic came up with our staff of how we should celebrate the end of the semester, they immediately asked if we could all go ice skating at Forest Park. I had not been before (see above) but figured it was time to get back out there. So after hosting the student staff for dinner last night, we loaded up and headed to Forest Park for an evening of ice skating. There was some initial trepidation that after having not skated for quite a number of years, I'd be pathetic, fall multiple times, and fear for dear life needing to hang on to the wall at all times. However, once I laced up and got out there, it came back to me quickly and I did just fine! A couple of the students even asked how often I went ice skating because they said I looked pretty dang good out there (shameless plug!) There were a few close calls where someone wiped out in front of me (including small children and adults) and I tensed up but no super close encounters and no wipe outs. #Winning.

All in all, it ended up being the perfect way to close out the semester with a group of students who have become my family here at work. A great study break for them in the midst of finals and a wonderful bonding moment for us as a team. I'm staring a busy work day in the face but look forward to it being over and to our department Christmas party this evening at a new restaurant in town called, Vida. And then to next week when the halls will close, the students will depart, and I'll head down south for a NOLA Christmas.

Happy Friday. Cheers.
