The fall TV season: My scorecard.

I blogged back in September about the upcoming premiere of the new fall season. You can revisit it here. Now that we have reached the first of December and most shows have either already debuted their winter finale or will soon be, I figured it was time for an update on my thoughts for the season. (Plus, a nudge from Jackie helped!)

So where are we at this point in the game?

Cheers
...to Scandal and The Walking Dead which have taken the co-lead this season as my favorite shows at the moment. The Walking Dead continues to impress me week after week and as long as you can stomach the blood and gore, the story lines keep getting better and the action never lets up. Plus, an episode a couple weeks back brought me to tears. Tears. And as for Scandal, this may be my favorite Shonda Rhimes show yet (and that's saying love considering I still watch Grey's and Private Practice and enjoyed Off the Map for it's 1-season wonder). The show is incredibly well written, does a phenomenal job of having each episode stand alone while stringing along some larger "scandals" and
features a great ensemble cast.

...to Parenthood for tackling cancer this season and for the superb acting of Monica Potter and Peter Krause. While some aspects of the show have begun to wear on me (not a huge fan of where the Jason Ritter and Lauren Graham storyline is going), overall, it's a great season 3.

...to Glee which I didn't really expect myself saying. However, the addition of the "new kids" with cameos along the way from the graduates has made the show more enjoyable for me. And the music has REALLY made the season, especially the break up episode and the Sectionals episode recently.

...to The Good Wife for its revolving door of guest stars (Amanda Peet, Nathan Lane, Maura Tierney, Stockard Channing, Kristin Chenoweth and Michael J. Fox and Matthew Perry returning later this season) who have made the show exciting and given it some fresh air. The show continues to impress me each week and is also going strong in season 3. Plus the series regulars are EN FUEGO.

Jeers
...to Revenge. Something I thought I'd NEVER say but the show is not NEARLY as good in season 2 as it was in season 1. The introduction of "The Initiative," the new story lines, and even the new characters have all left me wanting more of what season 1 offered (revenge, plain and simple) and less of what season 2 is offering (still trying to figure that out...)

...to NEW SHOWS! I gave up on 666 Park Avenue, Last Resort, and The New Normal after giving each show 3-4 weeks to hook me. None of them did. And considering that the first two were canned, I made the right choice.

...to Once Upon A Time. Yes, I still tune in each week but overall, I'm not too invested in the quest to bring Emma and Snow back home. The show was more intriguing when everyone lived under the curse.

Meh
...to Law & Order SVU Grey's Anatomy, Modern Family, and Criminal Minds. All shows I continue to keep up with that I watch more out of habit than I do anything else. Of these, Grey's is the front runner for the one I try never to miss. The rest? I could take them on repeats.

...to Private Practice which is finishing up this spring and closing down shop on the Grey's spin off series. I'm not sure what I quite hoped for in the 13-episode, limited final season, but so far, have not found myself overly impressed.

...to Revolution and Nashville, the only two new shows I still watch this fall. Both have their strengths which is probably why I have continued to tune in each week but neither has grabbed me with the same energy Walking Dead, Revenge, Scandal, or Good Wife did when I first started watching them.

So there we have it folks. Yes, I do watch A LOT of TV. Don't judge.

Cheers.

Oooh - so glad you wrote this post. So a lot of these shows I don't watch (but, I mean, I watch other shows instead...I'm not making some comment about you watching more tv than me), but some of them I do & have opinions on your opinions...

1) I totally agree about Glee. It has pleasantly surprised me this season. And I'm so glad they're finally addressing an eating disorder - it seemed like a major teen "thing" they hadn't yet touched.

2) We're still watching The New Normal...but sometimes I wonder how much I actually like it. I mean, it's fine. I enjoy it alright, but I'm not in love.

3) I agree Modern Family isn't as fall-out-of-your-chair funny as it has been in season's past...but there are some moments here and there that crack me up.

4) Ok - I was REALLY into Revolution in the beginning. But as the season went on, I started to get weighed down by all the violence and killing. I'm much more interested in the stuff relating to the power than the power struggle going on in the country. (Did you see my play on the word "power" there??)

5) I LOVE Nashville. And I'm sort of surprised you don't - it seems like it would be right up your alley. Love Connie Britton. Love the music. Love the d-rama. Love it all!
