bittersweet.
Today is my last day living in Memphis. Hard to believe the time is finally here. I depart tomorrow for Bham to visit LJ and then move on to Athens and Atlanta on Friday to move in and spend the weekend with Ash and J. It's hard not to be excited about beginning a new chapter in my life and moving to a new city with new faces. But it's also making me a bit anxious, nervous, and sad to say goodbye to a city I have grown to enjoy mostly since leaving undergrad.
Memphis gets dumped on. A lot. I think it ranks near the bottom of almost every list. I remember when I was interviewing at CBU, Mosey asked me as a recruiter on the road, how would I describe Memphis in an attempt to bring students to the land of the delta blues. I remember saying that Memphis is like a diamond in the rough. I think every city has its pros and cons and it's about discovering the beauty of a city, not harping on the negative. This city has so many great people, festivals, restaurants, and events taking place.
Things I will definitely miss the most include Bogies, Eclectic, Cooper Young Arts Festival, Memphis in May (yes people, the entire month, not simply the Music Festival), Crawfish Festival, and the list goes on. Even the Trolley Tour which I only recently discovered is a great event at the end of each month. It was great to spend my first few years as a young professional in a city full of growth, potential, and have the ability to pick up the Flyer and do any number of things on any given weekend.
So for all of those Memphis haters out there, get over it. I'm gonna miss this city and I think I'll always have a spot in my heart for Walking in Memphis.
In other news, my sister called me a yuppy last night. I'm not really a big fan of labels but I rolled with it and decided to look up yuppy in the dictionary to get the most accurate definition. A yuppy is defined as "an ambitious young adult, usually college-educated, living in or near a large city, with a professional career and an affluent lifestyle." Well, maybe that isn't so bad. I started to protest but I am sitting here drinking a latte at eclectic eating a warm croissant with strawberry beurre so....hey, if the shoe fits...
Checking out one last restaurant tonight before hitting the road tomorrow: Ciao Bella. Going with Will, Laine, and Dan for my last roommate dinner. I love Italian places and it comes highly recommended.
Internet access will be spotty at best over the next week or so before Charter comes to install so don't worry. Things may be quiet for a while but I'll be back as soon as I can!
Hope everyone is having a great day and week. Cheers.
