Falling in a winter wonderland...
Once upon a time, in a college town right outside the great city of Atlanta, three master's candidates (who also happened to be roommates) experienced the greatest winter storm to strike Athens. The storm began yesterday morning with a heavy, persistent rain and as the temperatures began to fall, the rain turned into snowflakes!
At first, I was in awe of the snow and ran outside to take photos. (Me being the southerner that I am, snow is a rarity). As the snow continued to fall, talks began around the house that we could possibly lose power. NO WAY I said. Impossible. Circa 4:30pm yesterday afternoon while I was in the shower, power went out. fml.
We sat around for the remainder of the afternoon watching the snow fall praying power would be restored by 9pm for the Brothers and Sisters movie event we had been excited about for the last two weeks! As night approached and the house became eerily dark and quiet, we gathered our supply of candles, flash lights and blankets and settled in for a night of card games.
Around 8pm, still without power and still upset about not being able to watch Brothers and Sisters, we made contact with a friend who invited us over to her place on campus to watch the 2 hour movie event. After weighing the pros and cons, we decided power, warmth, and tv heavily outweighed having to go outside and off we went.
We made it safely to her apartment but after parking the car and walking toward her door, Ebeth fell. fml. We helped her get inside but she was grabbing her shoulder and in a lot of pain. We made the decision to forego watching Brothers and Sisters and head back out into the snow to drive to St. Mary's (the hospital). fml.
Upon arrival at St. Mary's, Ebeth was taken back where she spent the next two hours getting X-rays, pain meds, and a gorgeous hospital gown that was very becoming on her. Meanwhile, Kari and I sat in the waiting room where there just so happened to be a flat screen tv that just so happened to be airing the Brothers and Sisters 2 hour movie event. Ebeth ended up dislocating her right shoulder (fml) and Kari and I ended up watching the movie. Funny how things end up...
Driving home last night, the entire neighborhood was pitch black, there were trees lying across the road and several power lines were either hanging low to the ground or literally on the ground. It looked like a scene right out of Cormac McCarthy's The Road but picture snow everywhere instead of ash.
INSERT: Kari reminded me that I completely forgot (or blocked out) what happened when we got home. We finally all settled into bed, blew out all the candles, and turned off the flashlights. It was pitch black in the house. Not five minutes later, every smoke detector in the entire house went off. There were LOUD beeping sirens coming from all over the house. We all jumped out of bed and ran around in the dark plugging our ears wondering WTF was going on (fml.) They stopped on their own about 60 seconds after going off and we crawled back into bed.
Power came back on this morning about 6am and I've never been happier to have it back. Campus is closed today and I'm looking forward to having a BRAD day and helping Ebeth. The winter storm sure did a number on our little town of Athens and as pretty as the snow is, I'm looking forward to its disappearance.
And the moral of this story boys and girls is this: if you are home safe and sound, STAY HOME.
THE END.
