Charlie Wilson.
I'm a big fan of films. Everyone knows it. And while I always enjoy a nice, mindless, entertaining film, I'm always interested in watching the films that have folks talking. I like to be informed, you see, and be able to have an opinion on the matter rather than always taking the side of critics.
I didn't see Charlie Wilson's War when it came out because I thought it looked somewhat boring. The critics all hailed the film but audiences weren't as supportive, especially young audiences. My peers weren't impressed. After my father told me that he loved the film, I figured I might as well add it to the Netflix list. I forgot I had done so until it arrived in the mail circa 3 weeks ago. I barely find time to watch Netflix films I'm really interested in much less one's I'm not so I didn't have high hopes for ever getting to the film. In fact, I even debated sending it back unwatched to get to the next in my queue.
But I packed it for my trip to Austin figuring I'd kill some time in the airport watching it. I just finished it today and I must say, I found the film to be well done, informative, and moving. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams (loving her more and more) and Philip Seymour Hoffman all gave great performances. The film is based on the true story of Texas congressmen Charlie Wilson who takes up the cause for Afghanistan to defeat the Soviets and remove them from their country. It was moving to see what one man was able to accomplish.
I'm not telling you to run out and rent it immediately. But I am saying it's a good film and one you shouldn't stray from if you ever have an opportunity to see it. Especially if you love politics, or history, or Texas.
Off to see Watchmen tonight. Cheers.
