Not in my eye!
Circa three weeks ago now (possibly four), my right eye turned red something fierce. Having experienced both the displeasure of pink eye and the discomfort of a scratched cornea, I knew neither applied to my current predicament. In the process of taking out my contact, I noticed some "gook" on it. I threw it into the trash and decided to give my eye a day to rest before putting in a new pair of contacts.
Over the course of the next few weeks, my right eye has had good days and bad days. There are days when it feels just fine and I'm able to function normally and days when it is agitated and hurts so badly, I want to rip out my eye ball and settle on a nice glass one or perhaps start a new trend by sporting an eye patch (perhaps even a bedazzled one!)
My right eye and I would play a game each day to see who would win. If I won, my eye would cause me no trouble. If righty won, I'd be clawing at my eyeball begging for reprieve. After having enough of the game, I made an appointment with my eye doctor. I canceled it last minute as my eye was giving me no grief the day of the appointment. However, the problem returned.
Tired of listening to my friends incessant pleas: BRAD, GO TO THE EYE DOCTOR. YOUR EYE IS ALL RED AND DISGUSTING, I made an appointment and went to visit my friendly doc today. The verdict: I had some bacteria in my eye (your guess is as good as mine). As a result of said foreign object, my white blood cells went into overdrive to rid my eye of the bacteria. As they were playing a friendly little game of battle in my eye, the constant insertion of my contact only made matters worse and caused my eye to stay inflamed and full of bacteria because the contact stifled my eye and didn't allow the white blood cells to do their job.
So I'm off tomorrow to fill a prescription, will don my glasses for a week, and give my eye a chance to win the war against the bacteria. I'm meeting with the eye doc next Friday and hopefully, fingers crossed, all will be well with the world and I'll only be in the hole the cost of the prescription and the two visits. Worst case scenario doc said, I'll have to go through a whole new contact fitting and order new "high oxygen" contacts and well, that's a pretty penny I'd rather not spend at the moment. So fingers crossed!
