Walking in Memphis.
I returned home (it feels like my second home) to Memphis this past weekend for the annual Memphis in May BBQ Festival. Though the backdrop had changed and the festival was held in Midtown instead of on the river due to the massive flooding, things felt exactly the same as in years past. Delicious BBQ, free beer, and great company.
Here's a recap of my weekend down south:
I got in early Friday deciding taking a day off was definitely in my best interest.I rode down with a buddy who was also heading to town which made the drive much more enjoyable and definitely cheaper with the steep gas prices these days (4.09 yikes!) I got in around noon, met up with some friends, and hit up the festival where we spent the next 12 hours eating and drinking our fill. By the end of the night, I had beer and BBQ coming out of my pores and was exhausted. But it was great to see so many people and make some new friends.
BBQ'd out, we hoped to spend Saturday laying out by the pool but the Memphis weather had other plans for us as the weather dropped to a chilly 60 degrees with no sun! Boo! We hit up an old favorite of mine, Cafe Eclectic for breakfast, did some shopping around midtown, saw Bridesmaids (HILARIOUS) at Studio on the Square, and Saturday night went downtown to Local Gastro Pub (amazing) for dinner and drinks and then to Bar Dog Tavern. I was thrilled a former coworker of mine from St. Louis was able to meet up with us for dinner. So great seeing her!
The worst decision we made came on Sunday when we thought Fresh Slices would be a great place to grab an early lunch. I used to love that place but after visiting, I definitely feel it's lost some of its luster. Plus the food wasn't even that good. Bummer. I ended the trip by grabbing coffee with an old friend before hitting the road again and heading back up north.
All in all, exactly the weekend I needed. Though I didn't get to see one friend I had hoped to see and two were out of town, I consider the trip a success in terms of spending quality time with almost everyone I love in that city. It was good to be back!
Thanks Memphis!
Cheers.
