Weekend Recap.

'Twas the weekend before Thanksgiving, and what's a boy to do? Roller skating, movies, corn hole, and DIY projects of course! I am departing on Wednesday for NOLA for a brief but much needed trip home for Turkey Day and while I had planned to use this weekend to clean the apartment, launder, and begin packing, I instead found multiple excuses to be out and about. Looking back on it, this weekend had more work engagements than normal with a program Friday night I made an appearance at, student staff interviews most of the day Saturday, and a quick visit to support Dance Marathon where in only our second year, the students raised over 60K (incredible!!!!) early Saturday evening. But outside of that, the weekend has been full of fun.

Friday night I connected with my inner pre-teen and went roller skating with Danielle and Brigid. Throw back! Apparently Danielle and Brigid were dreaming of becoming roller derby girls and thought they should practice first. While we may have been the only people above the age of 13 without children at the place, we loved it! I was a fan of the 90s pop music blended with today's R&B jams. I think I could have stayed all night...

Saturday night I went to see Lincoln with Janelle. I give it a B+. I had been wanting to see it because I have a feeling it will receive a ton of Oscar buzz. Steven Spielberg did a phenomenal job directing and Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln made me feel like I was legit watching Lincoln and not someone playing him. And while the cast featured some other great performances from Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones (and anything with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it has my vote), the storyline dragged. The move is about 2.5 hours long and I felt some plot lines should have been more developed while others should have been cut. Where I wanted the movie to be inspirational and moving, I instead found myself hoping it would speed along. But overall, I did enjoy it and am glad I saw it. I just didn't leave with goosebumps or that movie high you sometimes get. And post movie? Hung out with a bunch of folks playing corn hole until close to 2:30 AM. Good night indeed!

And that brings me to Sunday, otherwise known as DIY project day. I went over to help Shruti and Evie make a new coffee table out of pallets. And while the web sites and Pinterest sure do make it look easy (this being our main inspiration), I am here to report it is anything but. After two trips to Home Depot and a few hours with an electric sander and a power saw, we were left with two pieces that eventually will stack together to form the table. At one point throughout the day (and by one I mean MANY), we all lost hope in the project but kept pushing forward. And when it's complete, hopefully we will have a beautiful piece for their living room. If not? At least it will make for a fun story. And if I never attempt another furniture project with pallets, well, that would suit me just fine. Because they are a PAIN IN THE ARSE to paint.

Cheers.
