Skate Land USA

Does one's ability to successfully navigate a wooden skating center's floor with a pair of these on your feet mean you're a product of the 80s? I'm not quite sure. What I do know is that putting on a pair of old school roller skates, going to a sketchy, smelly, old school skating center with 50 students, and watching them attempt to skate around while only falling 1, 2, or 37 times is amazing and quite hysterical.

Instead of our normal Dawg Camp staff training tonight, we went to Skate Land USA (not it's actual name but I don't know what it is...). As my coworker described it, "That place sucks. But it's all we have." It's relatively cheap ($5 or so) and with some old school tunes like Benny and the Jets and some new hits like Apple Bottom Jeans, how can you go wrong?

For an amazingly outgoing group of orientation students, half of my students looked scared shitless at the thought of not having a wall to cling on to. Didn't these kids rollerblade when they were younger? I understand 4 wheels in a square is a bit harder to navigate than 4 wheels in a line but isn't skating like riding a bike? You never really forget how...or at least you shouldn't.

Add in an 80s themed skating party and you have a recipe for one great memorable outing with the DC staff. Did I mention I love my job?

Cheers.
