Work Weekend
I consider myself pretty lucky that among a majority of my peers in the field who regularly work nights and weekends for various student meetings, programs, etc, I am rarely in the office past 5pm and even more rarely working a program on the weekend. The exception to both of those is predominantly serving in the 24/7 on call rotation for campus. It's my weekend/week!
So my weekend was unfortunately not filled with sleep, relaxation, or fun hangouts with friends in the city. So what were the high points?
1. The Cardinals won the World Series! I watched the game Friday night and was excited for the city and the team that they pulled out a victory over the Rangers (I was NOT excited by the INSANITY that ensued as a result both on campus and in the city).
2. Service! I got up Saturday morning (after not much sleep) and did a service project with some colleagues and friends as part of the university's annual service day for faculty, staff, and students. Over 3100 individuals participated in various projects around St. Louis this year! WOW! My team went to a learning center/after school program near campus and spent the day organizing their library and coding books based on the reading difficulty. Sounds awful but it ended up being a lot of fun!
3. A halloween dance party sponsored by my students in the hall. We had over 100 students show up for the program and I couldn't have been happier for my students with all the work they put into it. I didn't dress up due to being on call and I didn't think the university would fully support me showing up to respond to a situation dressed as a ___________. But some of my favorite (and more creative) costumes included a parking cone and a cow boy. Not a cowboy but a cow boy.
So there you have it! Sadly, no dressing up or crazy halloween party of my own and I spent the better part of today following up on issues from the weekend but I'm having my own mini celebration as this is my last weekend on call until at least February! WAHOO!
Cheers.
