Milk.
No...not the drink. Although it does do a body good. I went to see the film, Milk, last night after hearing that it received rave reviews. I did not know much about the film except that it focused on the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected politician in the 1970s. The film is incredibly moving and touching. I was happy to see a film with gay characters (that actually had depth) do well. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Brokeback Mountain, but if the film weren't about two gay cowboys played by two great straight actors, it would have been a very slow love story. I think it got so much attention because of the gay story line. Milk, on the other hand, is educational and inspiring.
If you haven't seen it, you need to. Not only does the film do an exceptional job of detailing Harvey Milk's rise to political power, it goes deeper into the lives of gay men in the 1970s struggling against a society that denies them their civil liberties. After all of the Prop 8 garbage, the film couldn't have come at a better time. It gives hope that we can fight and work toward a better tomorrow.
Here's the preview to get you revved up:
