Weekend 1: Success
It's good to be wanted. That about sums up how interview weekend went. That and "you gotta roll with the punches." Despite the number of planning meetings and reservations to ensure this weekend went off without a hitch and we didn't upset the faculty and appear to be incompetent to both the candidates and to the faculty, we still managed to run into a few glitches here and there (or everywhere). Luckily, everyone involved in the planning of the weekend maintained an enthusiastic attitude and the candidates never knew.
I hosted this weekend. My hostee, Colby, is a senior at Sacramento State in California (Surprisingly, we had 4 people interview this weekend from CA...who knew?) He's a "housing guy." That's how he referred to himself all weekend and in his non-housing assistantships. "I'm a housing guy." Plain and simple. Needless to say, he's hoping to land an assistantship in housing. I showed him a bit of Athens this weekend (this being his first time in the south), cooked a nice breakfast for him, and showed him what we southerners do best-good ole southern hospitality. He did ask me at one point yesterday if it was true that we southerners don't curse. (False.)
Out of the 27 candidates that joined us in Athens this weekend, I think all were impressed with the program and are eager to hear good things from UGA. We have another 30 coming next weekend. Same show. Different audience. It felt great to see so many people impressed with the program and hoping to land one of the "coveted spots." Our cohort did an incredible job this weekend of doing what we do best-entertaining.
Despite all the work and the zaniness of my life right now, I'm proud to be in this program and incredibly lucky to be here.
Cheers.
