Happy Valentine's Day!

It's never really bothered me that I haven't had someone to spend Valentine's Day with. Well, that's not exactly true. Sophomore year of college, I dated this girl who came to visit me in Memphis over Valentine's Day. I was excited for her to visit but my friends all thought she was a dud and for whatever reason, I agreed. I broke up with her on Valentine's Day. Yep, that's right. She drove 386.7 miles to visit me for the weekend and I dump her on Valentine's Day. I was a jerk. I admit it. I also allowed my good friend Jose Cuervo to peer pressure me into shaving my head that weekend. What was I thinking? She didn't like the shaved head. Maybe that sparked the break -up conversation. "It's not you," I told her, "it's me." Cliche, I know and overused but in my case, completely accurate! The kicker: She was supposed to leave the next day but her friend she drove up with who was visiting her boyfriend (and now husband) decided she wanted to stay a few more days. So on a small campus of 1500 people, I kept running into my ex until she and her friend finally went home. Two months later, my ex got pregnant. (Definitely not by me). She called me on New Year's Eve of that year to tell me she missed me and asked me what I thought of her soon-to-be-born son's name. It was awkward. I haven't spoken to her since.

It's funny that I am writing that story now. That was six years ago...My friends would also probably want me to mention that she spoke in a baby voice when she wanted something and it was incredibly annoying. I'm sure her new born son enjoyed it. I on the other hand, did not!

So today, on V-day 2009, I'm content being single. I'm looking forward to the day when I do have someone to share this day with. And I have no doubt it will be incredible. But for now, I'm focusing on my friends and the amazing relationships I do have. So to everyone you love, be it family, significant others, or friends, enjoy the day. And count your blessings. After all, love is what makes the world go round...and what makes life worth living.

Cheers!
