the best part of waking up...

I enjoy this little jingle by Rockapella. We are big coffee drinkers in this house. Every morning we have the pot brewing and it's rare that a day goes by when the coffee pot is silent. I was never a big coffee drinker growing up. My mom drank coffee like it was a drug. A few years back, Mom switched to cold drip. I was skeptical at first (and slightly turned off by the thick film coating after heating it) but have adjusted to its taste when I'm home. Here in Athens, we use the old school coffee maker. I did not enter into the coffee world until college when I began experimenting with iced white mochas. I loved 'em. As a young professional, I enjoyed getitng to work at CBU, pouring myself a cup of coffee and settling into the day. Now, I'm pouring a travel mug full as I dash out the door to class or work. But I think I like the idea of coffee much more than the actual taste of it. Don't get me wrong, I can jazz it up to my liking but overall, I don't drink it because I love it. I drink it because of the appeal of having a cup of coffee.

That's all about to change. I let my roommates know last night that I have giving up coffee on the weekdays. I have my reasons...It stains my teeth, leaves me with coffee breath, makes me use the bathroom more, and about halfway through my travel mug every day, I become disenchanted with the lukewarm or cold beverage and end up pouring it out. So I'm going to try something new. I wouldn't call it a New Year's Resolution per say but I am going to see where it takes me. Beginning Monday, I am going to make a switch to making smoothies in the morning and taking those with me. I have a feeling I might enjoy those more. I've been looking for recipes on-line that are quick, easy, and economically friendly on a grad school budget and I haven't found anything I'm in love with. I am going to just wing it with my own concotion and see where the road goes.

My plan:
1 cup soy milk, skim milk or yogurt
1/4 cup frozen juice
2 scoops of protein powder
1 tbsp flax oil
1 cup of frozen or fresh berries

If you have a better one, please send it my way! I'll let you know what I think! And then maybe Rockapella can do a little jingle about that. Wouldn't that be something?!

Cheers.

unfortunately rockapella didn't sing about how folgers coffee smells like a ciagarette after it's been brewed. about the smoothie - i'm not sure what you're going to nutritionally, but frozen strawberries, one banana, and a little bit of orange juice is awesome - the perfect blend of sweet and tart.
