No, the title wasn't a slip of the keypad. I'm talking about the greatest reality tv show and the best thing to hit summer television, So You Think You Can Dance. I don't know when I became hooked on this show (think American Idol meets dance) but I can tell you it's phenomenal.
I enjoy the show because unlike American Idol, it doesn't drag out for-ev-er with Ford commercials, stupid judge remarks, and shameless plugs. Unlike Dancing with the Stars (I can't even watch that show...) it features more than just Ballroom dancing. Every week features a mix of jazz, hip-hop, broadway, krunk (yes, krunk), and my favorite, contemporary. I enjoy the show because I've learned a little bit more about different styles of dance. I enjoy the show because each week features a different guest judge and I've become quite fond of the choreographers: Tabitha and Napoleon, Tyce, Mandy, Adam, Dan (where has he been lately?), Wade, and of course, Mia.
The premise: After auditions in various cities, 20 dancers are selected by the judges during Vegas week to be part of the season. The top 10 males and 10 females are paired off and each week, each pair randomly selects a category of dance. They are assigned a choreographer who teaches them a routine to perform Wednesday night. The judges critique each performance and then America votes. On Thursday, the votes are revealed and the bottom three couples must perform solo routines to "dance for their lives." The judges deliberate and decide what guy and what girl go home each week. The dancers keep the same pairs unless their partner is sent home. Once we reach the top 10 (5 males and 5 females), the pairs are switched each week until we get down to the final 4. From there, America votes and selects the winner.
Why is this show unlike other mindless reality tv shows? Because I couldn't tell you what the prize is for winning. I'm sure there is some cash involved and now and again, a spot in some show but for the most part, the contestants don't dance for a cash prize or a record deal. They dance because they love it.
If you're still a hater (or a doubter), check out the clip below. I'll try to post my favorite every week from the night before. Last night's top 20 was SO GOOD I couldn't pick my favorite so here's one of the best from last season:
