"Is you stupid!?"
There are many reasons why I'm grateful for my UGA grad school experience. One of those reasons is my colleague and friend, Cord. Tonight I'm dedicating this post to him. I hope he's feeling all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it. He's a fellow Rhodent although our paths never crossed on campus. He likes to say they never would have anyway but we were both uberinvolved students so I'd like to think we would have. He's also a former Mr. Rhodes and a member of the Rhodes Hall of Fame but hey, no biggie.
Cord has a way with words. He's always creating and popularizing new expressions like "doing the most," "doing the UTmost/the UT/the UTty, etc." But by far, my favorite Cordism is the infamous, "is you stupid!?" I've found myself saying it almost daily to those I encounter on the road, in the gym, in my office, on campus, and in Walmart especially. IS YOU STUPID!? It's got a nice ring to it and sometimes, it's the nicest thing you can say when you'd rather hoot and holler at somebody for being a buffoon. Man, if only I knew this phrase last year when I was irate with my former landlord for being a craptastic individual or when I was threatening Charter because no cable company can seem to get it right.
Tonight, I wanted to respond to an email from a student and simply say, IS YOU STUPID!? But I didn't. I chose the support road, the one all too often traveled within our field and crafted a more eloquent, endearing message letting the student know I would come to her rescue and assist her with the crisis she was having. Poor planning. poor communication. Poor thinking. But I love my students and I love my job. I'd like to keep my job even and I'd like to continue working with students. Thus, I keep some thoughts to myself or reserve them for the times when my professionalism won't be called into question by responding to a student that way.
But believe me, I sure get tempted.
