This is the story of a door....
Before
This is the story of a vintage, 100-year old pine door that I stumbled upon at an antique store a few months back. Priced at $60, I had visions of it becoming a headboard. What sold me on it was not only the wood paneling but also the rusted doorknob and skeleton key hole. Character at its finest folks.
I enlisted the help of my pal, Kelly, and over three weekends we worked on transforming the door into a headboard. The task (involving 3 total trips to Home Depot and about $70 total):
- Scrubbing the door down as it was filthy!
- Taking off all the hardware and spray painting the doorknob, hinges, and key plate a metallic/rustic gold.
- Filling in some of the larger gashes/holes with stainable wood putty.
- Sanding the door down twice.
- Staining the door a rich "Bombay Mahogany" satin stain/polyurethane in one.
- Cutting two 2x4 pieces to 21 inches tall each to serve as legs and staining those.
- Purchasing all new screws and eye hooks to give the headboard extra support by hanging it on the wall.
The door post staining! We ended up only having to stain it with one coat because the original color was already a dark burgundy/mahogany color.
So after placing all the hardware back on, we were able to get the door in place in the guest bedroom. Note, I plan long term to attach the legs to the bed frame itself but for now, it's holding just fine and the end tables on either side are offering extra support.
Almost complete!
AMAZING!!!!
So that's it folks. Creativity hard at work. After spending less than $130 and putting in about 2 full days of work, I now have a new headboard in my guest room. LOVE IT.
Cheers.
