Weekend Recap: Rock Climbing & Wig Stomping
Upper Limits
I. love. festivals. Well, good festivals anyway. So when I heard there was a new festival coming to the Grove called WigStomp on Saturday night, I was all over it. Apparently, not many other people were. I convinced some friends and new colleagues to join me and after spending part of Friday afternoon shopping for wigs, we gathered last night for a hair and makeup prep party. #Winning.
I settled for a simple mohawk wig and Brigid decided the wig could only be complete with some goth makeup. [Not sure what I'm doing in the photo to the right but since it's the only one I have of the night, you'll have to deal with it.] Sadly, the event was poorly attended. Slated to run from 5pm-11pm in the street, we arrived about 8:30pm to find the street pretty empty, the vendors essentially only the 3-4 bars right in the area and next to no food. And barely anyone donned wigs and costumes. Cue the uncomfortableness of wearing makeup and Danielle's tiny tot black t-shirt. Determined not to throw away the night (or our costumes), we went to a nearby bar, played pool, darts (all in costume of course) and tried to salvage as best we could the pitiful festival. Oh well, perhaps the first one is always the worst?
All in all, a great Saturday! Looking forward to spending the day relaxing, enjoying the pool, and laying low.
Cheers.
I awoke Saturday morning to a text from my friend Danielle asking if I wanted to go indoor rock climbing. Sure! Why not! Always down for a new adventure. So we set out midday for Upper Limits which has two locations in the city, one of which being right down the street from campus. Who knew!? We paid $13 for the general admission and another $3 for a harness choosing to skip the extra $5 for chalk and shoes. Mistake. Danielle also paid the one time $3 certification test fee to become a belayer. That mi amigos is key because without a belayer, you're resigned to either climb only the areas with the automatic belays (4 total) or beg someone to belay for you. Luckily, we met some new friends (Nick and Lisa) who have been climbing for years all across America and they offered to belay for both Danielle and I at different times so Danielle could climb just as much. I quickly learned climbing is more about how you position your body and the strength in your legs...not your upper body strength as I originally thought. My spirit felt defeated at times that I couldn't tackle some of the more difficult climbs but Lisa was shocked it was only my first time climbing based on what I could do. #Winning. Though we only stayed 2.5 hours, we left, our bodies SPENT. But it was awesome and I'd love to go again. Next time, I'll take the certification test and then Danielle and I can run free and play all day.
